Bank branch closures in 2004 at 249 were the highest since 2000
when the current pause by the main banks commenced and is an indicator
that the issue is firmly back on the agenda.
In publishing its annual update of branch closure history (see
Reports section of this website) CCBS again highlights the UK
as the poor relation in European comparisons of branch coverage
and draws attention to the main banks’ continued resistance
to the shared branching model which could sustain a banking presence
in communities vulnerable to withdrawal by individual banks. Moves
such as NatWest’s trial re-introduction of a mobile bank
in Cornwall are diversionary rather than a sustainable solution
to the problems of these communities.
